Antville Project

ladies and gentleman!

save your skin(s)! this weekend we'll try to (finally) move antville.org to our new server and update to the latest version. as a result antville.org will occasionally be unavailable. what we're going to do is to transport all contents of the existing weblogs into the new system ... just the contents? yes, everything but your skins. nearly all the antville-code was rewritten, and it's impossible to convert all the different layouts/skins to the new version. so all your weblogs will come up in antville's default design. but we'll try to keep this version of antville online (just disabling creating/editing new stories/comments), so you can copy your skins from this system into the new one and adapt them. sorry for this inconvenience. i hope all those great new antville-features (polls, search, goodies, topics etc.) will compensate this.

newbie...need help.

hey, a question here...i love this thing, and would like to integrate it into my site. Is it possible for me to just make a link to the dintendo weblog from my site and just let people look at the log from there? I alerady tried linking to it from my geocities site and it just brings up the main antville.org page...and i don't want that. please tell me how to work this thing...thanks. email me if possible @: aiheichu@hotmail.com. thanks.

antville online polls

as a specialist for unrequested features i implemented polls in the latest antville version.

it's still in development but you can already test it at hopdev (robert, i hope you don't mind the question, it's just for testing purposes ;-)

please note that login is required for both voting and creating/editing polls. otherwise you can take a look at the poll results only.

btw. please let me know what the results look like in other browsers than msie. it's some kind of quick css hack.

Antville weblog search

I finally checked the weblog search functionality into the CVS. Thanks to Robert's recent changes with only one text table, it was very easy to implement a search on both stories and comments.

antville search

Maybe I'll add partitioning of search results on separate pages today, which could be extended to a generic previous/next navigation framework.

Let me know what other features you'd like to see. There's a lot we can do here, like advanced searches, searches over the whole site instead of just one weblog, etc.

new update

checked in last night. the changes are:

  • user-rights are now (internally) bit-level encoded. this should make it much easier to create new predefined roles or even offer fine-grained user-rights (defined per user). thanks to hns for the eye-opener
  • as a result, there's now a new role - "content manager" - that gives full rights on all contents (stories, comments, images, goodies), but is not allowed to edit weblog-preferences, members and skins. hope this works for you, kris.
  • i tried to solve the membership-mess in antville (as discussed here and here), meaning: - i removed the possibility for admins to disable user-signup. - "signup" (which is now called "subscription") has - for now - just one benefit: the subscribed weblog is added to a list, which results in a page for every user containing these subscribed weblogs plus the ones the user is a member of (= contributor, content manager or admin). to give this more sense this "your subscriptions"-page also contains a list ordered by the last update (kind of a "personal" version of the weblog-list on antville.org). and maybe one day there will be a mail-notification-service in antville too ... - users are now also allowed to "unsubscribe" - users do not have to subscribe to a weblog anymore just to get a chance of becoming a contributor, contentmanager or admin, it's all up to admins now: search for existing user-accounts (by username), choose the appropriate account and define the role of this user. should make things clearer.

i also cleaned up the code a bit more, and as always i hope i didn't introduce any new bugs. since this was the last big change on database-level i think antville should now be quite safe for the long-awaited update (after a bit more testing of course). anyway, please comment on these changes and report any bugs you found.

(btw.: there's a new db-patch called antville_dbpatch20020109.sql - please apply before)
