Antville Project

Pocket PC Mobile Channels

Tobi, thats propably your department:

I want to create a mobile channel for pocket pc's (win ce) for antville. Mobile Channels are pretty much the same like rss, with the difference, that the Internet Explorer can use a mobile channel (which is a xml file) to download all linked items of that channel. So you can browse them offline in the subway. (what i realy would love to do )

i saw that you have all your rss.skins located in /global is there any special reason for this?

to create a mobile channel i would need to go into story, weblog and comments, because i need not just to provide a channel-xml file, but also create cdf-pages (cdf=Channel Description Format) for each story. this are the html pages you can read offline.

but i think when we .zip the functionality at the end of the process (for the live server) and make it a package this should be o.k.

i would need some hints and comments on the way how you develope at antville. (are there any don'ts ?) and: i don't have a cvs account

a good example of a mobile channel is: derstandard.at

the docs on msdn are not realy up to date. (and complete)

tobi is currently reworking the rss-output of antville (most of the global rss-skins already moved to different prototypes), i don't know if he's finished already (but i'm sure he will tell you more when he's back in vienna).

reg. your extension: since "mobile channel" is afaik a proprietary format i don't see it being a part of the main antville-branch, but as a perfect example for using helma's application extension mechanism using .zip-files. so i don't think there's a need for a cvs account (cvs-write-access is limited to the main developers and frequent (helma/antville-)contributors).

that's fine with me,

if it doesn't become a core part of antville. But I disagree with you that mobile channels are a prorietary format. it's xml and it was submitted to the w3c. everybody can use it and write applications for it. O.K. its invented by Microsoft... and that's the main reason why nobody else supports this format.

By the way providing a simplified HTML view of a weblog can also be used by other palm offline readers, like AvantGo, or for surfing via a GPRS-Handy/Palm combination. So the cdf-xml file is just a hint file for IE to create a mobile channel.

Anyway I will post a working .zip extension for mobile channels in the next days. I already finished scripting, but it still needs some testing and zipping of course.

matthias, the changes i applied to the rss output are in the cvs, already. if you get the latest antville version from there you should see how the new version works.

Does it work on PalmOS

It would be great if it is possible to view and especially post on antville-sites from a handheld running PalmOS. Though I´m not a programmer I´m not sure whether this will be possible with the stuff you´re talking about. If so, I´m really lóoking forward to it.

it could also be used with AvantGo

As far as I understood AvantGo there are two ways to get a channel. The provider registered the Channel at AvantGo and you can subscribe it from there Website, or you just tell AvantGo the StartURL and say how many links deep you want to crawl. And that would work with my addition.

I'm not parsing the content yet. So there are still non AvantGo Tags in the content (like tables, and so on). I don't know if the AvantGo Software is parsing the content itself, or the Website needs to be clean in advance.

posting from a PalmPC) PocketPC can POST/GET send forms. So I could provide a simplified post-page for that.

There are also blogging Solutions for AvantGo and Palm. But I'm not an expert for that...
