new macro: <% fakemail %>

to support the stop spam-campaign of schockwellenreiter antville has got a new macro: <% fakemail %> generates a list of 20 (by default) faked email-addresses (you can vary the number by using the attribute number).

<% fakemail number="23" delimiter=" | " %> oupl@huofdbfagjcjr.edu | atvrbldop@yjhxlcmdqitziyjezab.tv | oxdybe@xuecvdwxxlybiiqezlf.st | mwobqbtcf@eekivlfdojy.eu | nrxuv@rflhndiovjoccq.ca | kpooo@tinbxeyqllmnuppdcbdl.pl | kiydt@qszhichtngzjodbbsycdvx.com | zrq@shdjjluwfmsnmdoiy.dk | puocsl@vxmbdlbu.br | ulasn@hkehqlqwimlltugntoodd.br | eftirgylm@vgemkvnwihso.net | khblgx@pcfghneqwzljkyid.st | lgn@rduhsnqhny.ar | mippw@bpljawvldagkbltkfjnmvei.mil | pfftkb@loykbpdytgate.com | zctgwygdp@himxorffkinmvwlfdqw.ca | pfqas@qemjepkkmfsblulxtlqy.ch | djgevbjs@yvugvjpqyrmmhbgaxniqv.dk | qdfwdmbtsg@vfeckdsqlnsqfryqc.eu | mvehrp@usmpmkafwudnmkgtfwru.br | psplzx@ygbqfdygjbleuztpoktmuri.de | zopnb@qphtrlqdoaqxnaodb.de | jjqgul@segrxdpfhudrw.es

update

i added a general limit of max. 50 addresses (ie. values higher than that in the number parameter will be ignored). morever, you can define the delimiter with param.delimiter. and the last delimiter is not displayed anymore.

while we are at it

this is definitely an interesting idea to contaminate spammer's databases. however, for them it probably is still enough to have one valid e-mail among a million non-existion ones (sending mail is pretty cheap, innit?).

so my question is if you would like to see a macro that encodes an e-mail address as html entities? (as i do it here, for example.)

it might provide at least a temporary protection of an e-mail address – until the point the spambots translate the entities back (but then we surely will come with a new strategy :)

a last it doesn't work

Contaminating a spammers database does not work:

  • The costs of validating a domainname is quite low.
  • It does not protect your email-adress.

Spammers fire and forget their UCE/UBE, a few fake adresses are no cure at all.

There are much better ways to protect your mailaccount from spam as to use this stupid macro. Use images for your e-mail adress, utilize anti-span-software.

There is a german article: nosleep.antville.org about this issue.

i need

to make these generated adresses invisible without changing my parameter for link-colors...

put them into comment tags or use a custom style sheet class.

yep. this works: i pasted this:

<!-- <% fakemail number="30" delimiter=" | " %> -->

into my skin for the story-display.

Good idea but ...

a spammer can very easyly check if the addresses are valid. He only check if a entry exist in the DNS and if not ignore the address!

D. h., ich kopiere

das Macro einfach irgendwo in eine Story auf den Leuchtturm?

yes

for example. you also could copy it into the main skin or anywhere you think it would make sense.

this is a bad, bad, bad idea

doing something like this is nothing but harmful. firstly, the arguments about why this doesn't help at all, which are presented here (see above/below), are true. secondly, while it would be cheap for a spammer to check the fake domains for validity, spammers won't even care. they will send out loads and loads of spam to fake addresses and waste bandwidth. they will generate the cross-product of all user-names (the part before the @) and all host-names (the part after the @), send mail to all those addresses and consume even more bandwidth. now my mail server won't just get e-mail to foo@mydomain.org and bar@mydomain.org, it will also have to deal with e-mail to nrotdhhbb@mydomain.org, wenmy@mydomain.org and so on, wasting processor time and stuff, which makes the effects of this approach even worse.

filtering spam out is a way to deal with it. but this idea is nonsense. please stop it at once.

the debate on using

fake mail adresses is as old as methusalem, oh well, maybe not that old, but it's got quite a beard.

an even much older problem

are dogs shitting in the streets, yet after ages of people stepping in the shit we're slowly developing working methods how to deal with it.

anyway, before taking any action, it's always a good idea to come up with some kind of measurement that gauges its success. so far, i haven't seen statistics showing how much harm or good hiding fake addresses everywhere has caused.

Problem in RSS-Feed

Unfortunately we didnt consider the following problem: the adresses are generated at each request, therefor RSS-readers assume the story is new and mark it as unread. I now have a dozen unread stories in NetNewsWire and can't get rid of them. The only solution would be to not execute this macro in the rss-feed - possible?
