Antville Project

Antclick 1.0 PR 2 or FC or something?

A lot of things have changed since the latest Antclick release. I'm interested in an all-inclusive package made from the latest sources and I would volunteer to prepare it. However, I ran into difficulties because I had to build the current Helma snapshot on my computer. The downloadable snapshot crashed on Mac OS X and our Linux Box with Java 1.3.

How can this problem be solved? I suppose you use Java 1.4. Does this mean that a new Antclick should consist of two helma.jar files?

BTW, how far away are you from the release of Antville 1.0? According to Userland's reports there is a big demand in Frontier and Manila. Antville can easily compete with them if it wouldn't appear as work in progress. I truly believe that releases with regular version numbers would introduce more clarity.

Re: Antclick 1.0 PR 2 or FC or something?

Hi kris, Antclick should build ok. The thing you saw that a recent helma snapshot didn't work with antclick 1.0pre1 is related to new dependencies which were introduced since then.

The work-in-progress thing has haunted us a long time, but it's the only way to carry on a project like Helma that is so brutally underpowered in the human resources department for what it tries to do.

Actually, I'll try updating and building Antclick now. Stay tuned.

look, antville is cool and definitely less buggy than some of it's competitors (cough), but the way it is currently presented leads to the impression that it is not ready yet. potential users might not try it because it looks like alpha software.

all i want to suggest is that you should consider building regular releases every now and then when you think you have a stable version, update the read-me and put it on the ftp server. this shouldn't be too much time consuming but it will definitely increase to confindence in antville among potential users.

Re: Antclick 1.0 PR 2 or FC or something?

hi kris. what exactly do you mean by "the downloadable snapshot crashed" on your machines? what did happen? any error messages?

i am using a pretty new snapshot compiled under osx on my computer and it's running as usual. however, i am currently not able to compile a working snapshot under windows (will post a bug report).

Re: Re: Antclick 1.0 PR 2 or FC or something?

I think we updated Jetty, the XML-RPC library and maybe other things since then, so just replace helma.jar is expected not to work.

i was up-to-date

and the error i got is

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.IllegalAccessError: try to access method java.util.Calendar.getTimeInMillis()J from class helma.util.Logger at helma.util.Logger.nextMidnight(Logger.java:374) at helma.util.Logger.lastMidnight(Logger.java:378) at helma.util.Logger.(Logger.java:84) at helma.util.Logger.getLogger(Logger.java:118) at helma.main.Server.getLogger(Server.java:426) at helma.main.Server.(Server.java:209) at helma.main.Server.main(Server.java:92)

the helma.jar i built on my mac is about 100k smaller then your snapshot and it works.

Re: Re: Antclick 1.0 PR 2 or FC or something?

right, please get all the necessary update from cvs for your lib directory, too. not to forget to check out the latest build stuff into your build directory.

however, the error message somehow looks like an incompatibilty of helma and java 1.3... (but i am no expert)

Re: Re: Antclick 1.0 PR 2 or FC or something?

Yes, this was an incompatibility with JDK 1.3, but it was already fixed 3 weeks ago. I'm using JDK 1.3 on my iBook, so these problems never remain unnoticed very long.

Re: Re: Antclick 1.0 PR 2 or FC or something?

well, the most recent downloadable helma.jar snapshot is helma-20021001.jar and thus older than three weeks (and one day). so everything is ok, then, innit? kris?

Re: Re: Antclick 1.0 PR 2 or FC or something?

Oops, sorry. To much time since last snapshot. I put one out at helma.org

this one looks okay

the one from the 1st of october crashed definitely. i built one myself on the 16th which works fine. so apparently it would have worked well if you had compiled it.

sorry for the confusion, i thought it had something to do with the java version used to build it. so, everything is okay. cheers, mates.

How you can help

kris, if you want to help with Antville/-click, something to do is to write/update the README file. Currently, it is all about Helma, but we need at least a section that is about Antville, i.e. what it is, about the built in database and about how to set it up with MySQL etc. The file is here let me know when you need help with CVS.

okay.

i made notes about all that already because i have set up a server with a mysql and apache and a test install with the internal server and mysql. (although the update to jaguar messed up mysql.)

Re: Antclick 1.0 PR 2 or FC or something?

ad release: since there are not many open bugs (correct me if i missed some and please file a bug-report here) i'd say we're pretty close to a 1.0FC. but - as hns wrote - this project (and helma itself) is pretty underpowered and after all we're all having our bread'n'butter-jobs which tend to keep us away from working on antville/helma :-/

nevertheless i'd like to claim a feature-stop 'til we have finished 1.0, otherwise this work-in-progress will go on. hns, do you need help with need_for_speed?
