I've got a very good MySQL book. It has a chapter about backup techiques. I'm checking it now... hm, backing up with direct file copy can produce inconsistent backups, but I don't think it can corrupt tables... of course I'm not sure about that. the other method is to use the mysqldump utility.

it's fixed looks like the problem is the backup-agent because it seems to lock files (and i stupid idiot included the mysql-datadir ...). thanks for reporting that so quickly! re hns: the backup of the database is done with mysqldump.
