Antville Project

what am i doing wrong?

i just grabbed the latest antville app from the cvs and the latest helma.jar, but it doesn't work as the topicspace site.

  1. the url "[weblogname]/space" is not found
  2. the mod sidebar still has an error when no stories have been created or when stories are offline.

btw, i accidently created a weblog with the path "new". this should not happen. can i delete it?

ad 1. did you apply the antville_dbpatch20011204.sql to your mysql antville database?

ad 2. yes, i am still experiencing this with the latest check-out. maybe robert did not finish, yet...

See the Bugs section over at the TopicSpace site.

Re 1: Are you sure you got the whole update?

Re 2: I also encountered the error in the mod bar.

What happens with the "new" weblog? Can't create new weblogs anymore? If you're running MySQL, you can use a MySQL client to delete it (delete from WEBLOG where ALIAS = 'new'). Otherwise you could use the HopObject inspector, don't know which one is easier.

i created one

with the path "new", but couldn't access it. the path should be reserved.

it woiks

maybe i missed something, so downloaded everything and it looks okay. for some reasons i couldn't reproduce the mod bar errors on you site.

I got the mod bar errors too

Maybe it's related to whether you're logged in and the site owner or something like that.

i simply forgot that i should check for names already used by actions. thanks for trying this, kris, so this will also be fixed within the next update.

switching off topic space g

are you planning to make the topic space optional? or, even better, can you give the site admin configure the delimiters? to me the * appears to be very unfortunate.

Hmmmm

kris, would you be happier if we used [sqare brackets] instead of asterisks for linking? Or are you unhappy with this kind of linking in general?

If you do run your own Antville server this feature is pretty easy to disable.

square brackets

if we use square bracktes for linking we should be aware of three things:

  1. square brackets are harder to type on many non-english keyboards.

  2. square brackets disturb the reading process more than asterisks (i think it's hard to find an adequate replacement here). that's one reason why i don't like the [define something] insertions after undefined topicspace links, btw.

  3. square brackets are one option of adding a reference name to a link as we discussed once here.

do you remember? [1]

<how about this>

that kind of linking is great. i've already talked with gero to make some wierd shit based on it.

it's not about me, i just want to make sure that noone accidently uses it. so the code should be something less obvious.

i made bad experiences with manila, which uses

  1. " for shortcuts
  2. *** means bold till the next cr
  3. --- creates a <hr> it regularely happens that someone uses one of these things on dsr or in the discussion group of other manila sites, which yields to unexpected results and i need to explain it. this sucks. knowhatamean? i want to be able to build community sites that keep it as simple as possible.

<* *>

is not bad at all.

Regarding the [define xxx], yes, that's pesky. I like the way everything2 does it: if something that's marked as link is not found, you get a normal link to a search query over the space, plus the option to create the topic.
