Antville Project

antville.org sucks

tobi and i (exceptionally i allow myself to speak for the two of us) are just as upset as you might be about the current performance here at antville.org. the new server appearently has at least one faulty memory module. we can't do anything against it since we don't know whether hns did anything to get replacement memory (because he bought the server he's the only one who can order them). henso.com surprisingly told us that he will be away for the next days. we try to calm ourselves in the meantime. please join us and don't bother too much. take our humble apologies for these unnecessary inconveniences.

don't panic

If he interrupts his offline vacation for updating his homepage, I wouldn't suppose that he doesn't also take the time to inform the vendor. Anyway, if you suspect that it could take a significant amount of time until replacement arrives, you might want to consider isolating the fault(s) and immunising your kernel against them. Of course this causes downtime, but that might happen anyway :-)

In other news: nex is not upset and doesn't think antville.org sucks.

Heej

It´s somewhat inconvienient that antville is down so much the last few days. Especially now the war is happening....

But eej ! antville.org loggers log for free on an awesome platform in weblog world.

Sure I´ll be glad if things like this will not happen but I cannot say I mind it very much...

Well

it's actually not true that I am the only one who could have ordered replacement parts. Both the bill and the Reklamationsschein are lying in my office (to which Tobi and you, if you're in Vienna, have full access) and you would have found them even without calling me. If you'd called, things would have been even easier, of course.

Anyway, it seems things are running well again. Is that a misconception? Do we still need replacement parts or should we wait and see? Also, did you make any changes on the server since last week (can't find anything in the config log).

tobi, March 28, 2003 at 3:33:29 PM CET

you're wrong hannes. way wrong.

a) i won't snoop in your office, that's a grotesque idea.

b) everything i could have told you on the phone you already knew. so why should i bother? i am not your nanny.

question is: why didn't you call? or at least let us know that you're not in a state of acting? sure, i am sorry for your injury. so next time hit the ball, not the ground. at least don't hit and run.

why don't you get yourself together and take a look at your own failures first?

then i probably will talk (or blog if you prefer it?) with you about my potential faults.

hns, March 28, 2003 at 3:42:12 PM CET

why didn't i call?

because I was on holiday on a mountain hut without access to the internet and no way to know how antville was doing.

tobi, March 28, 2003 at 3:44:07 PM CET

i am talking about before going offline. but you might even know that, too.

hns, March 28, 2003 at 3:59:26 PM CET

before going offline antville was running fine. i was offline since last tuesday (march 18). I was shortly online last friday (march 21), but only to check in work from tuesday and tell you I would be off. As you know I noticed then that elise had problems, and I tried to help you fixing it when I was online, but I also made quite clear that I wouldn't be available to follow the development any further and order or install replacement parts. Where's the mistake?

robert, March 28, 2003 at 4:49:14 PM CET

sorry, hns

this is ridiculous: it can't be that hard to send either tobi or me a mail (or call us before you leave) telling us what we need to know for getting replacement ram (as i wrote, we didn't even know if you already did something or not). i wasn't in vienna (arrived yesterday), but even if i would have been i won't poke around in your office searching for something that i can just assume it's there. as far as i'm concerned i have better things to do than to follow when you're online or not.

reg. the ram: we know since quite a long time that some of elise's memory is fishy, and afaik ecc-ram isn't capable of self-repairing. now i don't want to see more blogs leaving antville because of its lack of stability, thats not what we all have been working for the last years.

katatonik, March 29, 2003 at 12:56:56 AM CET

humbly asking

this is all very nice to know, but do you really want this place to become an antville-soap? (I can just imagine the storyline to continue: hns marries off his daughter to Tobi's super-enemy in the server business, increasing the grip of his empire on unsuspecting innocent antvillians while Tobi mobilizes the remaining, somewhat less innocent antvillian forces to stage a massive uprising on the Image Upload Front (IUF). All this takes place while robert's flirtations with The RAM (TR) turns into a gothic love drama with sever legal consequences. In the end Mr. Makotter and his Evil Eurorancheros take over the entire realm and force everyone to grow mustaches bigger than the next best Central European Country. Oh, and all this is way too long and protracted for a single bracketed storyline, but there may be a point to it which I forgot a long time ago.)

hns, March 29, 2003 at 7:08:30 AM CET

:-)

I talked over an hour on the phone with robert yesterday and we cleared everything out. At next opportunity I'll talk to Tobi too, so I consider the soap closed.

robert, March 30, 2003 at 12:40:19 AM CET

@hns: i don't think we cleared everything out, there are many things regarding this project that are still left open and beg to be solved (which i hope will happen next week). nevertheless there were a lot of reasons that explained a lot. @katatonik: this is not a soap, i'm just serious about this project (and i hate mustaches ;-)

katatonik, March 30, 2003 at 11:28:01 PM CEST

ok, we'll drop the mustache-part of the plot and order the unpaid underlings to do a script rewrite involving absolutely no facial hair :-) ... seriously, i understand that this is not a soap, but maybe these are just not the kind of problems which can be usefully discussed in this weblog ... anyway, glad to hear they are moving towards solutions.

Yes, seems so

FYI: Nobody is leaving Antville 'cause of some outtime periods. I think, you make a good job here and we all are glad, Elise is even existing. Thanx hns, thanx tobi, thanx robert and the rest. Sometimes Antville-Outtimes are even necessary to look out of the window and - perhaps - going for a walk...;-) We're all no-professional Bloggers and this is only internet, so what...

In a way I can understand hns that he had the feeling, that the original story "blames" him for the offline-times and this must be the reason for his public reaction/defense. I can assure you that I never thought like that. I am not expecting 24/7 support here!

Shit happens!

And who knows - maybe in nine months the first antville caused babys will pop-up :)
