i am continuing a former thread here.

a quick hack to ping weblogs.com is now running at hopdev for every updated public weblog: if a story was updated in between a certain period (currently 10 minutes as experimental value) AND the weblog was not ping'd in between this period, weblogs.com will receive the title and url of the weblog via get method (ie. url-based).

this method seems to be pretty slow (which is caused by the huge userland html output returned from getURL function, imho) and eventually we do have to use xml-rpc for this task.

it also might be necessary to add a checkbox to the preferences to toggle participation with weblogs.com.

i am thankful for more suggestions how to do this right.

you're right, we should add a checkbox for enabling/disabling the publishing of changes (just to weblogs.com?).

i can only think of two ways doing it: either use the scheduler (as you're doing now) or store a flag in weblog.cache after creation/update of a story or comment and let the next request (the one after the redirect) trigger the ping to weblogs.com.

anyway, using xml-rpc would b nicer, and depending on the time this ping takes (and weblogs.com reading the page) i'd stick with using the scheduler or use a flag.
