Sites are gone... Help! Some logs are gone, are they coming back?

I'm not sure but what you're describing might have been caused by some troubles I was having with my leased line. There problems seem to be over now (fingers crossed). Although antville.org is not located in our office, the nameservers for antville.org are. I'm right now in the process of registering additional nameservers for antville.org that are outside our office so in the near future problems with our line won't affect antville.org. Question to robert: is it ok if I register and use adele.helma.org as secondary name server for antville.org?

it wasn't the nameserver, methink. last time you had dns trouble the symptoms were different to what people reported over at help.antville.

oh, it was definitlely the nameserver because i'm sitting behind this line and I can tell when it goes down ;-) and i know that there are no other antville.org nameservers around ... yet. (The line is back to usual blinding speed by now) Robert, I'm now installing the bind8 package from ftp.suse.com. Do you think we'll need to modify the firewall in order to run it?

yep the firewall won't let anything through without modification. you have to modify /etc/rc.config.d/firewall.rc.config and then restart the firewall. btw.: judging from the time of "Webmasters" posting i'd say the main problem was that i powered down adele ;-)

m'kay maybe there was an additional problem. i had this error message for some of the sites, but not for all, in my subscriptions and i have no idea how this could be related to nameserver problems.

anyway... looks like no change to the firewall is necessary, since it's already running on adele and I can query it from coletta! The only problem is I have to add it to the services that should be started and I can't do it with Yast because F3 key isn't working... any idea how to do this? (blush, I should know ;-) And... thanks a lot for plugging in the RAM, Robert! I know it's not a nice job ;-)
robert,

F3 via ssh in yast is easy: simply use ctrl+f and then press 3 (or 0-9 where 0 = 10) and your're right, hns: adding ram isn't a nice job if the machine doesn't boot anymore afterwords. that's why we could only add 256MB and not 512 as planned ...

thanks worked fine. I have bind8 running on adele now, working as slave for the antville.org and helma.org zones. Adding other zones should be a breeze (just look at /etc/named.conf - adding an entry to that file is all you have to do for slave zones!) PS: crazy computers. ... comment
