Antville Project

maintenance-day pt. 2

today evening (around 6pm local time) we'll try to change the server of adele.helma.org. the reason for this is: getting more of everything (disk-space, memory, cpu-speed). if everything works fine, antville.org shouldn't be down longer than half an hour. sorry for the inconvenience, but it should be the last big maintenance day for a pretty long time.

UPDATE: maintenance cancelled for today (see comments)

wow

this comes as a surprise! Why? I mean, it is really running quite fine, and it has some space to grow, right? What happens with the current server, and where is Helma CVS/Web going?

everything

stays the same, nothing will be changed or must be reconfigured. we're just going to exchange disks (from 9 to 18 gb), which happens during runtime (thanks to the hotswap-diskarray), and after that we're exchaning the server itself. the reason for that is simple: why not upgrade if it doesn't mean any additional work (except this one half hour) ;-) we've tested it yesterday with another linux-machine, and everything worked fine.

Then

I'm against doing this upgrade now. There's no urgent reason to do it, and I think that after the recent downtime, any further downtime (be it scheduled or not) will do harm to antville.

We can still do the upgrade when we need it, can't we?

not really

the server-change now is an opportunity that will be gone in about one or two weeks (because the server that should become the new adele will be used for other things). anyway, i already cancelled the upgrade for today because i managed to destroy a disk-array (not physically, just the data) with testing a worst case-scenario ;-) so we'll do some more testing and then decide again if it could work smoothly.
