search box on every page

Is anybody else thinking that it would be nice to have a simple search text box on every page instead of having to go to the search page in order to enter a search term? Well, as is so often the case, the only reason why this isn't so already is that I (having implemented the search feature) didn't know where and how to place it.

So if you suffer from the current click-to-search situation like I do, please step forward and let us know where you think this box should go and what it should look like!

check my sites, mates

it's been there since the introduction of the search feature. the code is fairily simple: <form action="[yourSiteAlias].antville.org"> &ltinput size="24" name="q"> &ltinput type="submit" value="find!"> &lt/form> it would be nicer if there was a macro for the weblog url. (maybe there is one, but i haven't found it.)

where would you put it?

in the "menu" secion, or down below after "recently modified"?

i'd put it

in the menu-section (below those navigation-links that are related to the current site).

how important is it to you?

it probably makes most sense near the calendar/archive section. but in the end you can spend hours discussing the order of the sections in the sidebar.

what about the url macro? is it avalailable? if so, you could add a home link to the sitename in the top left. it's only a small change in the main skin and an update in the css.

here is the comm portâ„¢ way:

<form action="<%this.url%>search"><input name="q" value="<% request.q encoding="form" %>"><input type="submit" value="search"></form>

i would put it in 'menu' before the calendar separated with dotted line.
