Antville Project

the road to 1.0? (cont'd)

recent references: project.antville.org done except macros for embedding a story/poll.

project.antville.org (stroke out everything that's obsolete)

project.antville.org

further suggestions:

  1. removing as much of backward compatibilities as possible (we have to parse story contents anyway)
  2. implement color picker done.
  3. improve antville.org frontpage with recent project stories or the like (ideas?)
  4. don't forget to go through feature requests and proposals and bugs.
  5. [added by robert] new preference either in story-form or site-preferences to allow posting comments for everybody/subscribers/contributors ... [cancelled]
  6. [added by tobi] moving ubiquitous macros (or functions if there are any) to hopobject. e.g. createtime_macro appears in almost any prototype... done
  7. ...?

re 1.: I'm against removing backward compatibility as long as we still have old versions running (like here on antville.org).

re 3.: Yep, the text on the front page should go. What I envision (for antville.org, but also for the software distribution) would be to be able to "plug" one or more weblogs into the frontpage, so everything posted to that weblog (or those weblgs) will appear on the frontpage. Alas, we're still lacking the macros to do that.

I was going to try to build an Antclick package today. Just saw that the Antclick build system looks a bit out of date (didn't look closely yet, though).

of course removing backwards-compatibility-code can only go hand-in-hand with a script that replaces i.e. old macro-attribute names in stories/skins with the new ones. if that's not possible we have to keep the backwards compatibility.

actually

that's why i mentioned that we have to write some parse (or call it "clean-up") functions, anyway. e.g. they will replace any obsolete <% weblog.macro > with the new <% site.macro %> (which is due to the new database naming scheme).

I think

  1. makes sense only if createtime_macro is defined for every hopobject and is always implemented the same way.

exactly

that's why i posted it here.

you mean

it's implemented the same way for every hopobject?

uhm

well, it's not exactly every hopobject... but at least 4 or 5 prototypes use the same createtime_macro (especially, if you add missing checks for parameters and so). as an example i moved this macro now to hopobject and removed it in the other prototypes. i think it makes sense since we have a createtime property for every hopobject and if we don't want to use the hopobject prototype's macro we easily can overwrite it in the specific prototype.
