helma or tomcat?

i just updated helma and antville on my server, but all i see is "The server encountered an error while processing your request. Please check back later." is this a helma or a tomcat error code? where should i look into first? i tried helma in stand-alone mode and it worked, but i can't get it to run behind that tomcat. any help is appreciated.

If tomcat has a helma.jar

make sure you update it to the new version from the Helma lib directory. Then restart Tomcat. BTW, running Tomcat just for Helma is total overkill, because mod_jk can connect directly to Helma (start with -jk option).

no helma.jar in tomcat

i know that it is an overkill, but it used to work. is there a howto for that mod_jk thing?

I'm pretty sure tomcat has a copy of helma.jar if it is to connect to Helma. have a look at some deep WEBINF/lib or whatever directory.

To connect Apache to Helma directly, start Helma with -jk XXXX and connect mod_jk to that port. Unfortunately I don't have a demo at hand. Maybe somebody else can help, or I'll put out something later.

i found the direct connect howto

helma.org but it looks outdated.

anyway, doesn't tomcat communicate via ajp1.3 on port 8009?

the copy of helma

is an alias, so it must be up to date.

which are the ports and/or options for tomcat

a long time ago you simply head to drop the -w switch for using tomcat. what am i supposed to do now? use -jk 8009 or no switch at all? neither option works, though.

RMI_PORT=5055

i found it. in case anyone still needs it: the secret word was RMI_PORT=5055 as specified in the web.xml inside tomcat/webapps/helma/...

changing to ajp turned out to be not as trivial as i thought because of rewriting rules and virtual hosts and i couldn't be arsed to rtfm.
